Shopify development is building inside a platform you do not control. The work splits into three layers: the theme, which is Liquid templates, sections and settings rendered by Shopify; apps, which extend the admin or the storefront through published APIs; and integrations, which move data between Shopify and whatever else your business runs on. What makes it different from general web work is the boundary — checkout, the order model, the customer record and the payment flow are Shopify's, not yours, and a large part of the craft is knowing which of your requirements fit inside that boundary and which have to be reshaped before anyone writes Liquid. ### How long does it take to build a Shopify store? A small store on a standard theme with a clean catalogue can be open in two to four weeks, and much of that is product data rather than code. A build with real theme customisation, a migration from another platform, or an integration with an ERP or warehouse is usually six to sixteen weeks. The long pole is rarely the storefront: it is data cleanup, redirect mapping if you are migrating, payment and tax setup per market, and the back-and-forth about which requirements the platform simply will not do. Teams that budget for the theme and not for the data move their launch date twice. ### Should I use a paid theme, a free theme or a custom one? Start with a well-maintained theme close to what you need and change as little as possible. Shopify's own themes are the safest base because they track platform changes; a good paid theme is fine if the vendor still ships updates. Custom themes are justified when your merchandising or content model genuinely does not fit an existing one, or when the store is a brand asset in its own right — but a heavily modified paid theme is the worst of both worlds, because it is neither updatable nor properly yours. Whatever you choose, keep customisations in sections and app blocks rather than scattered edits, so the next update is a merge and not an archaeology project. ### How much does Shopify development cost? There are two costs and teams routinely plan for the wrong one. Build cost: a standard theme setup with light customisation typically lands between $2,000 and $10,000; a serious theme build or a migration with real data is more often $15,000 to $50,000; a custom app or headless storefront starts higher. Run cost: the Shopify plan is the small part. App subscriptions are the line that surprises people — a dozen apps at $20 to $200 each adds up faster than the plan does — and transaction fees apply if you do not use Shopify Payments. Budget roughly 15–25% of build cost per year for maintenance, because the platform changes underneath you. ### When is Shopify the wrong choice? When your pricing or entitlement rules depend on complex customer-specific logic that the checkout cannot express; when you need to own the checkout experience end to end for regulatory or product reasons; when your catalogue needs a data model Shopify's product and variant structure genuinely cannot represent — configurable industrial products are the classic example; or when order volume makes per-order fees a material line and your rules are simple enough to run elsewhere cheaply. Everything else is usually a fit. The honest test is to write down your three hardest rules and try to express them in Shopify before commissioning anything. ### Do I need a custom app, or will an existing one do? Install when the job is standardised and boring — reviews, address validation, accounting export, basic subscriptions. Build a custom app when the logic is specific to how you sell, when you need data flowing to a system nobody else uses, or when the app you would otherwise install charges per order at a volume that makes buying it absurd. The middle path most teams miss is a small private app that does one job well against the Admin API, rather than a public app with a settings screen you will never use. And before either, check whether metafields, metaobjects and Shopify Flow already do what you were about to pay for.
